The Need for Preferred Providers

Psychiatric disorders represent a major source of disability for individuals with epilepsy. This is reflected in the new International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE)definition of epilepsy as a disorder of the brain that is characterized not only by recurrent seizures, but also by its neurobiological, cognitive, and psychosocial consequences.

Studies have shown 1 in 4 patients have a currently active psychiatric disorder. Among adults, depression is 2.7 times more frequent than in the general population. Up to 43% of children with epilepsy have at least 1 psychiatric comorbidity. 

Effective mental health for patients with Epilepsy requires a specialized lens because the intersection of Epilepsy and behavioral health is unique. If a provider doesn’t understand the nuances of epilepsy, they risk misdiagnosing symptoms or prescribing treatments that could actually increase seizure frequency.

How to Join the Behavioral Health Preferred Provider Network

 

  • Agree to be added to the Epilepsy Foundation Preferred Provider Network by completing submission form.
 
  • Complete at least 1 of 5 training modules
  • Sign Provider agreement with the Epilepsy Foundation of CT
