Helping find ways to manage and cope with memory problems
HOBSCOTCH (HOme Based Self-management and COgnitive Training CHanges lives) is a behavioral program designed to address memory and attention problems. It uses problem solving therapy to improve memory function in people with epilepsy. The program is designed to help adults with seizures find ways to manage and cope with memory problems in order to lead a happier, more productive life.
What we address…
The HOBSCOTCH program consists of 8 sessions delivered by a certified HOBSCOTCH Memory Coach. The sessions occur weekly and last 45-60 minutes. The first session is conducted either in-person, in a private office setting, or virtually while the participant is at home using a computer or tablet and a webcam.

I’m still working on sleep anxiety, but I’ve gotten a little better at scheduling pleasant activities if I get all my work done…going tanning once/week. I’m continuing to use sign language a lot to jog my memory and block scheduling. I also bought a white board that I color code to help keep tasks organized so I don’t forget them and their timeline.
I got 4 baskets to sort out mail and was able to clean up an entire area in my apartment. I did not answer the phone during the times when I scheduled to work on this activity.
I was taking an Uber ride and practiced the rhyming names using the drivers name. It was neat how it worked.
Dinner conversations with my family have improved and I have not noticed the same uncomfortableness or awkwardness if I don’t know what someone is talking about. I don’t feel so defeated and am empowered by having options of how to manage the situation.

The HOBSCOTCH program was first evaluated as part of a study conducted at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Epilepsy Center in New Hampshire. This study suggested that a self-management intervention can be effectively delivered over the telephone and evaluation demonstrated improved quality of life among participants.
Funding for this program is provided through the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention. Contact us today to learn more about HOBSCOTCH.
